(TORONTO) – Hope Air is pleased to announce a generous $25,000 gift from the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF). This donation will allow Hope Air to provide 94 flights for children in Alberta who require medical care far from home.
The EOCF is deeply committed to its goal of helping to enrich lives and eradicate social issues while finding long-term solutions to build strong, vibrant and safe communities. By giving to Hope Air, they are able to bridge the gap between families in financial need, living in small and rural communities and the specialised medical appointments and treatments they require. Without the vital service Hope Air provides, 35 per cent of patients would cancel or postpone their medical appointments, putting their health at risk. Another 34 per cent would travel by bus or car 4-12+ hours each way to access the medical care they need.
“Through the support of the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation, patients in Northern Alberta are able to access this vital link to medical treatments, specialists and equipment that aren’t offered in their home communities.” says Hope Air CEO Doug Keller-Hobson. “The EOCF’s generosity allows families with children experiencing illness or injury to spend less time worrying about the distance or cost of travel and more time focused on their child’s health.”
is Canada’s only national charity providing Canadians in financial need with free travel to medical care far from home, regardless of age or medical need. Since its inception in 1986, Hope Air has provided more than 142,000 travel arrangements to patients in need.
For people living on a low income in small and rural communities, distance and cost are very real barriers to accessing vital medical care. Hope Air is a unique and essential part of our Canadian healthcare system. Without the access Hope Air provides, our national system of universal healthcare coverage would fall short of its promise.
