Hope Air Supports Equitable Access to Fertility Care for Patients Who Must Travel

Recently announced in BC, as of July 2, 2025, a long-awaited change has taken effect for British Columbians hoping to start or grow their families: eligible residents now have access to one-time provincial funding of up to $19,000 to help cover the cost of a single standard IVF cycle, including treatment and medications.

This milestone announcement by the BC Ministry of Health marks a significant step toward making fertility care more accessible, inclusive, and affordable — particularly for LGBTQ2S+ families, single parents by choice, and individuals from diverse backgrounds.

While this program will help ease the financial burden of treatment, one key challenge remains for many across the province: travel.

Travel is a Major Barrier

In BC, fertility clinics are concentrated in a handful of urban centres, such as Vancouver and Victoria. This means patients from rural, remote, and northern communities must often travel long distances — sometimes repeatedly — to attend consultations, diagnostic appointments, and procedures.

For those already navigating the emotional and physical toll of IVF, the cost of travel and time away from home and work can become a barrier to care, even with public funding in place.

That’s where Hope Air comes in.

Hope Air: Helping You Reach the Care You Deserve

At Hope Air, we believe that no one should be denied medical care because of where they live. As Canada’s national charity providing free travel arrangements for specialty medical care, we help patients in financial need get to the appointments they need — safely, with dignity, and at no cost to them.

If you’re traveling for eligible medical care related to your IVF journey — including covered diagnostic and specialist appointments — and have a confirmed appointment you may qualify for free flights and ground transportation at arrival through Hope Air.

Building Families, Breaking Down Barriers

The new provincial IVF program is a major step forward in acknowledging that fertility is a public health issue, and one that should be addressed equitably. But for that equity to be real, access must go beyond financial coverage — it must also include the ability to physically reach care.

Hope Air is proud to support patients across British Columbia who are taking the next step in their fertility journey and invite you to complete an application to determine eligibility.

How It Works

Participating fertility clinics submit funding applications on behalf of patients directly to the BC Ministry of Health. Applications will be reviewed in the order received, and funding will be provided to the clinic to offset treatment and medication costs.
