Volunteer Pilot Program

Hope Air proudly recognizes our very own Volunteer Pilot Program as Hope Air Patrons, in honour of the extraordinary individuals who give not only their time, but their aircraft, expertise, and unwavering commitment to patients across Canada. Since 1999, Volunteer Pilots have expanded access to care by reaching communities beyond the limits of commercial flight routes, ensuring that distance is never a barrier to essential medical treatment.

With more than 350 volunteer pilots who have participated across the country in the launch of the program, the VPP is a critical part of Hope Air’s mission, directly enabling patients in remote and underserved regions to access the care they need.

Among this exceptional group are some of the program’s most dedicated contributors. Gerd Wengler, Gordon Roberts, and Paul Clark have each completed over 170 missions, collectively representing decades of service. Their contributions have been recognized through Distinguished Volunteer Pilot Awards, reflecting both their skill in the air and their deep commitment to those they serve.

Pilots like Paul Clark have helped shape and strengthen the program, offering guidance and leadership beyond their time in the air. Gerd Wengler’s long-standing commitment, as a dedicated pilot and donor, as well as his time serving on the board, has made him one of the program’s most active contributors, helping sustain and grow the VPP through years of consistent service. Others, like Gordon Roberts, describe each mission as memorable, grounded in patients’ gratitude and in the impact of helping someone reach care when they otherwise could not.

Through their generosity and dedication, Volunteer Pilots exemplify the very best of Hope Air’s community of supporters.
