A message from Métis Nation British Columbia

Taanishi (Hello),

On behalf of the Ministry of Health and Wellness and Métis Nation British Columbia, I am pleased to extend heartfelt congratulations to Hope Air on the occasion of their 40th anniversary.

For four decades, Hope Air has walked alongside Métis individuals, families, and communities to ensure distance is not a barrier to care. This work reflects Métis teachings of Wâhkôhtowin, the deep interconnectedness that binds us to one another, and Kaa-wiichihitoyaahk, the responsibility we carry to help one another through care, action, and relationship.

We are especially grateful for the strong and meaningful relationship we share, and for the support Hope Air has provided to Métis Citizens across the homeland, including many travelling from Northern British Columbia to access care. That more than half of Hope Air’s requests come from British Columbia speaks both to the realities faced by our communities and to the trust placed in Hope Air as an organization.

Hope Air’s commitment extends beyond transportation. Their continued presence at Métis Nation British Columbia gatherings, including the AGM Health Fair and other community events, demonstrates what it means to practice Kaa-wiichihitoyaahk, showing up, building trust, and walking alongside Citizens in a good way. These relationships help ensure that people know they are seen, supported, and not alone in their health journeys.

As shared through the teachings and language work of Amelia Douglas, words such as “Taanishi” (greetings) and “Maarsii” (thank you) remind us that relationships are built through respect, kindness, and reciprocity. These principles are reflected in Hope Air’s longstanding work with Métis communities. Through this partnership, and with programs such as MNBC’s Essential Medical Transportation Program, we are able to work together to ensure that no Citizen faces barriers to attending medically necessary appointments outside their home community. These teachings reflect the spirit Hope Air brings to its work, grounded in care and humility.

Maarsii (thank you), and congratulations to Hope Air’s dedicated staff, volunteers, donors, and partners on 40 years of service rooted in compassion and Kaa-wiichihitoyaahk. We look forward to continuing this relationship in the years ahead, grounded in respect, and a shared commitment to the wellness of MNBC Citizens.
