Newmont Canada Contributes $75,000 to Help Hope Air Patients in Remote B.C. Communities Access Medical Care

Toronto, ON (October 22, 2025) – For Canadians living far from specialized medical care, travel can be a major burden. With Newmont Canada’s generous $75,000 gift, Hope Air, Canada’s national charity dedicated to providing free flights for Canadians who need to travel for medical treatment, is able to ease that burden, helping patients from remote B.C. communities reach the treatments that can change their lives.

Since 2016, Newmont has provided support that allows Hope Air to arrange free flights and accommodations for patients who must travel long distances for essential healthcare.

Newmont Canada is committed to building and maintaining strong relationships with the communities where it operates, including those surrounding its Brucejack and Red Chris mines in northwest B.C. These remote regions are among the hardest to reach in Canada, with the nearest major medical services often located in Terrace or even farther afield. For residents, the journey to treatment can be long, expensive, and physically demanding—barriers that Hope Air helps to remove through its travel support programs.

“Newmont’s support has been a lifeline for patients who might otherwise face impossible choices between paying for travel or receiving medical care,” said Mark Rubinstein, Chief Hope Officer, Hope Air. “Their commitment to community well-being directly translates into better health outcomes for families in some of the most isolated parts of British Columbia.”

With support from Hope Air, Draco and his mom, Melina were able to fly from Terrace to Vancouver safely and access the care he needed for diagnosis and treatment for severe Crohn’s disease.

For each medical visit, Hope Air has arranged flights, hotel accommodations, and ground transportation, allowing Draco to stay on track with his treatment without disrupting their life in Terrace.

“Getting to Vancouver by road would be long and potentially dangerous. The only option we had was to fly there, but living with a single income, it was unaffordable,” says Melina. “Draco is doing so much better now. He has so much more energy now and he’s able to be a normal kid. He’s growing and he’s out riding and jumping on his bike and just doing all kinds of things he couldn’t do before because he didn’t have the strength.”

“At Newmont, our purpose is to create value and improve lives through sustainable and responsible mining. One of the ways we do that is through our community investment strategy,” says John Mullally, Head of External Relations & Social Performance, Canada for Newmont. “Our investment in Hope Air represents something both our organizations strive for – to remove barriers and build relationships so that everyone around our operations can live a healthy, happy life.”

By ensuring that patients, like Draco, in remote areas have a way to reach medical care, Newmont is making a lasting impact that goes beyond mining operations, helping to build healthier, stronger communities across the province.
