At five weeks old, Sienna’s parents noticed a lump on her neck. Initially dismissed by ER doctors as a virus, the lumps spread, prompting a family doctor to order bloodwork. Sienna was airlifted to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), where she was diagnosed with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH), a rare, cancer-like disease that required intensive chemotherapy, steroids, and a feeding tube.

During her treatment, Sienna’s family stayed at Ronald McDonald House for four months. After her initial treatment, she began a 12-week chemotherapy regimen, split into two phases, along with daily steroids. Traveling from Iroquois Falls to Ottawa, a 10-hour drive each way, was a major challenge, especially with a baby. Hope Air stepped in to provide transportation support, easing the burden of frequent travel. This assistance allowed the family to focus on Sienna’s treatment rather than the logistical difficulties of getting to and from the hospital.

Sienna’s ongoing treatment includes chemotherapy every three weeks and steroids, continuing until November 2024. While doctors are optimistic about her recovery, there remains a chance of recurrence. Throughout this journey, Hope Air has been crucial in ensuring the family can access the care Sienna needs at CHEO, providing them with peace of mind during a stressful time.
