As of July 8th, 2025, Hope Air has entered a pilot funding program with the Government of Newfoundland & Labrador, for which Hope Air will receive partial reimbursement for supports provided to patients who would have otherwise qualified for the province’s Medical Transportation Assistance Program (MTAP). This new pilot program provides valuable funding to Hope Air and enables us to continue to offer services to Newfoundlanders & Labradorians.
This funding project does not impact eligibility or benefits available to Hope Air recipients in Newfoundland & Labrador. Hope Air will continue to evaluate Hope Air applications using its standard eligibility.
MTAP is a reimbursement program available to all residents of NL with eligible medical travel expenses, regardless of income. For more information on the MTAP program, visit: Medical Transportation Assistance Program (MTAP) – Labrador Affairs.
Hope Air will continue to arrange and fully pay for eligible patient travel expenses upfront, which may include:
• Flights
• Up to 5 nights' accommodations as required to attend medical appointments
• Up to $80 in meal vouchers, at $40 plus tax daily
• Up to $80 (excluding taxes and fees?) in uber Uber Rides vouchers for use to and from the airport, accommodations, and medical appointments
Medical Transportation Assistance Program (MTAP)
As part of the application process, patients must now consent to Hope Air communicating relevant information to MTAP as part of this reimbursement process, as well as confirming relevant medical appointment information with healthcare providers.
There may be cases where a patient has additional travel expenses not covered by Hope Air. Patients cannot submit a separate claim to MTAP for the same trip if any it was medical travel was arranged and paid for by Hope Air, unless in cases where a long-term stay of more than 14 days is required. If a patient’s medical trip is required to last more than 14 consecutive days, they may apply directly to MTAP for additional eligible expenses starting on day 15 of their travel. These expenses must meet MTAP’s standard policy requirements and cannot be claimed through Hope Air.
Patients are encouraged to consider both options – Hope Air and MTAP – and choose the one that best suits their family’s needs.
