(October 12, 2023) Hope Air has introduced a new award named in honour of Give Hope Wings Expedition founder Dave McElroy, who has successfully paired his passion for aviation with his desire to help others. The Dave McElroy Give Hope Wings Volunteer of the Year Award will be given in his honour to the individual who makes the most outstanding contribution to the success of the Give Hope Wings Expedition.

As the founder and driver of Hope Air’s Give Hope Wings fundraiser, Dave has led as Chief Expedition Pilot on five flying expeditions that have raised $1.8 million for the charity since 2017. The expeditions he organized have touched more than 100 pilots throughout Canada and stopped in more than 100 communities nationally and abroad to raise funds and awareness for Hope Air.

When Dave retired in 2013, he was looking for his next big adventure. He decided would plan flight mission fundraisers to support local charities. When he moved back to Canada in 2015, he planned another flight fundraiser, this time with a trip to South America. Through his planning he learned about the work of Hope Air and after a meeting with the CEO, the event Give Hope Wings was formed.

Dave continues to encourage others in the aviation community to learn about and fundraise for Hope Air and continues to be an ambassador for the organization. His legacy and innovation have continued to make a profound impact on Canadians from coast to coast as the expedition has continued on.

This year’s recipient of the first Dave McElroy Give Hope Wings Volunteer of the Year Award is Glen of the Glen and Friends and Glen’s Hangar – Canucks Unlimited YouTube channels. Glen used his two YouTube channels to raise awareness of Hope Air, educate viewers on flying in difficult conditions, and raise more than $25,000 for the cause. Congratulations Glen and thank you for your dedication to the 2023 Give Hope Wings Expedition.
