October 1, 2024, Newfoundland & Labrador – Communities across Newfoundland and Labrador will proclaim November 5th as Hope Air Day in the province. These proclamations will be issued by communities including St. John’s, Portugal Cove-St. Phillips, Paradise, Gander, Corner Brook, Stephenville, Channel – Port Aux Basques, and Labrador City, reflecting the critical role that Hope Air plays in ensuring access to specialty medical care in this province regardless of financial need or where you live. For more than 38 years Hope Air has ensured equitable access to health care by providing free travel and accommodations for patients in need of medical care far from home.

“With the ongoing increased demand for our services from patients in need across Newfoundland & Labrador, we are working together with government and the private sector to ensure that no patient is left behind,” said Mark Rubinstein, CEO of Hope Air. “Our goal is to ensure equitable access to health care for people across the province. With the support of dedicated community leaders, partners, supporters such as the Northpine Foundation and the Government of Newfoundland & Labrador, we will continue to assist every individual, family and child, who needs help to reach vital medical care.”

This year’s Hope Air Day will be celebrated at the annual Ham, Eggs & Hope Breakfast, hosted by longtime Hope Air supporter and former board chair Jim Burton, recipient of the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador. The event, now a beloved tradition since 2016, brings together residents of Newfoundland & Labrador to support the charity’s mission while hearing from inspirational speakers, including Premier Andrew Furey. “Hope Air’s work is vital for the health and well-being of our residents,” said Jim Burton. “It takes all parties to ensure that every patient has access to healthcare regardless of where they live. I’m honored to be part of this incredible mission, and I know that together, we can help more people access the care they need.”

About Hope Air
Hope Air is Canada’s only national charity providing free travel, accommodations, meals and ground transportation for Canadians in financial need who must access medical care far from home. Since its inception in 1986, Hope Air has provided more than 200,000 travel arrangements for patients regardless of age or medical need.

For people living on a low income in small and rural communities, distance and cost are very real barriers to them accessing vital medical care. Hope Air is a unique and essential part of our Canadian healthcare system. Without the access Hope Air provides, our national system of universal healthcare coverage would fall short of its promise.
