VOCM: Teams Raise Money for Hope Air in Haul for Hope

Teams gathered at St. John’s International Airport this morning for a unique fundraiser involving teams hauling a 67,000 pound firetruck toward a finish line.

The “Haul for Hope” is Hope Air’s biggest national fundraiser.

Hope Air is a national charity that provides free, non-emergency medical travel for those who need it.

As part of the fundraising effort, teams were challenged to test their strength by pulling the massive machine.

Director of Newfoundland and Labrador for the charity, Jaclyn Sullivan, says the feat of strength is meant to represent the struggles of people and families who must avail of their services.

“So the event is really a symbol of pulling that burden on behalf of patients, and how community can come together and pull together and address those challenges and lift that burden for patients.”

Sullivan says there is a great demand for services in this province – and it is growing.

Last year they supported 2,100 patients in this province with travel arrangements, which includes flights, hotels, meal vouchers and Uber vouchers. This year, she says they have already surpassed 2,000 patients service and there are still four months to go.
