On May 27th, 2024, 84-year-old Joseph was going about his routine in Summerside, PEI., when he suffered a devastating stroke. The road to recovery required him to travel to Moncton, NB, for a consultation with a surgeon specializing in his condition. At the time, Joseph thought surgery would happen during this initial visit, but instead, the procedure was scheduled for July.
This delay meant that Joseph and his wife would need to return to Moncton in a few weeks, requiring multiple trips and overnight stays far from home. As seniors, the cost of travel and accommodation placed a significant strain on their budget.
Fortunately, Joseph remembered Hope Air, an organization his wife received support from a few years earlier when she traveled to Moncton for a biopsy. Back then, Hope Air provided bridge passes to help with travel expenses. Joseph and his wife reached out again and were relieved by the assistance they received.
“Hope Air was amazing. They provided us with a bridge pass, gas, and accommodations for my surgery. The room was only eight minutes from the hospital, which was very convenient.”
Joseph’s surgery went well, and he made a full recovery, but for Joseph and his wife, Hope Air’s support lifted a significant financial burden and allowed them to focus on his recovery. “If it weren’t for Hope Air, we would have had to pay for everything ourselves, which is a hardship for seniors.”
The support extended beyond financial relief; it represented a sense of care and understanding during a difficult time. “Hope Air is the most amazing part of our health care. Our friends told us that years ago, when they had to travel off-island for treatment, there was no help for them, and they had to spend all the money they had saved for retirement. Hope Air is very important to Canadians, especially since the cost of living is so high and so many people have to travel from their home province for health care and surgeries.”
Joseph will return to Moncton for follow-up appointments with his surgeon. Thanks to Hope Air, he feels confident that this journey will also be manageable. “We were so blessed that the surgery went well. Hope Air made this possible, and I cannot thank them enough.”
